In 2024, What’s In and What’s Out in Interior Design

Every year, people ask me “what trends are in and out this year?”  Well, here are a few short answers to that question.  For 2024, Quiet Luxury is the design approach which delivers on the gift of presence in any room.  A minimal palette with natural materials and rich colors defines this trend, creating spaces that exude calm sophistication and understand elegance.

Quiet Luxury: The Essence of Timeless Sophistication

In Quiet Luxury, there is an emphasis on showcasing classic, investment pieces that you can build a room around.  Rich woods, luxurious, soft and textured fabrics with quiet patterns dominate the home scene in this design trend.  As our Founder and CEO likes to say, “putting too much in a room is like a woman with too much makeup or a man with too much cologne…have a statement-maker…then, accessorize around it.”

In Quiet Luxury, layered tone-on-tone colors in a room can truly elevate it.  At NGage Properties Group, we call it “getting moody”. Layers of gray, brown, statement-making blues or rich greens for the wall and ceiling color as well as window treatments, sets a tone of intentional sophistication.  Within the room you add textures, captivating fabrics, rich woods, and ambient lighting.  From the moment you walk in, you know that something special is happening.

What’s In: Layers and Textures

Someone once said “when design is personalized, it is timeless.” Creating ways to add layers and textures; meaningful accessories, furnishings and colors that hint at your favorite places around the world; or, your favorite local coffee shop, is the way to go.  It is then that your interior reflects who you are; or, who you are becoming.

One way to achieve a personalized design is by incorporating elements that tell your story. Whether it’s a collection of souvenirs from your travels, a collection of artworks, or family heirlooms, these items add a unique touch to your interior. These minimal elements make your space feel personal, feel home – creating a sense of comfort and belonging.

What’s Out: All White Kitchens

Gone are the days of the mundane white-on-white kitchen. You can still have the clean, bright and airy look; but, we help clients thoughtfully add shades of blue, green, pastel shades and warm woods.  These colors bring a refreshing shift to the kitchen, making them more inviting and welcoming. Since our clientele is quite diverse, we always recommend adding a conversation piece to the kitchen with Parisian porcelain or ceramic tiles; Moroccan-imported lighting; or, Balinese floating wood shelving.  Entertaining friends for Sunday Brunch or colleagues for Thursday evening hors d’oeuvres will encourage engaging dialogue. 2024 gives you permission to choose more adventurous colors, add luxurious statement-making appliances, perhaps from our friends at Thermador, Wolf or AGA and entertaining accessories.

By thoughtfully integrating these colors and textures, you can create a kitchen that feels both timeless yet modern. Statement accessories and appliances also are becoming more popular, allowing homeowners to express their unique style and taste. A vibrant blue stove with brushed brass knobs or a set of pastel green cabinets can serve as a focal point for the kitchen, adding character and charm.

Embracing Natural Elements in Your Living Space

Placing natural elements into your home is a trend that continues to gain momentum in 2024. This includes using wood, stone, and natural fibers in your decor. Not only does it bring a sense of grounding and serenity to your home, but it also makes you feel connected to nature.

Wooden furniture can add warmth and texture to any room. A live edge dining table, bamboo accent chairs or a hand carved wooden sculpture becomes a focal point to your kitchen. Stone end-tables, charcoal stucco credenza, or slate gray ottoman can add a touch of elegance to your living space. A mix of textures and natural accessories as decor in your bedroom can make it more cozy. Subtle, personal elements to break up the normalties in a room can really elevate a space.

We have been a fans of Mid or Dark Wood-Paneled Walls and ceilings.  This has become even more popular in the Japandi style of designing in the bedroom, kitchen or bathroom.

For our clients, we added rich wood elements to the Primary bedroom wall against a neutral black.  The added benefit of the large, custom, pentagon-shaped black trimmed window by Pella ensured ample lighting throughout the room.

The Subtle Power of Accessories

While the concept of statement pieces typically allude to images of bold, eye-catching items, in the realm of quiet luxury, these items are reinterpreted with subtlety and refinement. Meaningful accessories and decor focus on quiet sophistication rather than overt grandeur.

For instance, consider a chandelier with natural materials like wood or brass with clean and delicate detailing rather than a flashy, oversized bejeweled design. This creates a striking focal point, yet simplicity of the craftsmanship. Similarly, a monochromatic painting or finely detailed sketch can add depth and elegance to a room without overpowering the space. By choosing a statement piece that emphasizes quality and subtlety, you can create a space that resonates with quiet luxury.

Sustainability with a Luxe Vibe

Today’s discerning clients seek not only aesthetics and comfort but also a commitment to eco-friendly living.  This year’s trend also reflect a growing awareness of our environmental impact, with innovative solutions that combine luxury with sustainability. The emphasis on Biophilic Design by increasing the use of natural elements through indoor greenery, adding water features and ensuringhouse build designs that increase the size and number of windows for natural light, all exude luxury and sophistication while supporting eco-friendly designs.

Sustainability is not just a trend, but a core principle of quiet luxury. High end interiors are embracing natural, sustainable fabrics, reclaimed wood, natural stone, recycled materials, energy efficient lighting and more.

For example, built in storage  with unsuspected LED lighting elements can elevate the look and feel of a bathroom.   Whether it’s a small powder room or a double vanity primary ensuite; small subtle changes can elevate the space beyond simple sconces on the wall. These design tips will maximize the space in your bathroom and give it a clean, modern aesthetic design. And, for that personalized touch, hang a photo of something meaningful, neutral or natural. Having a small plant can also bring balance to any space. A powder room may be one of the smallest rooms in the house, but the right lighting accented with the perfect green plant, can make all of the difference.   For kitchen spaces, we are also seeing a persistent demand to move away from gas cooking and more towards induction ranges and cooktops as well.

Embracing Your Personal Style

Ultimately, the key is to create a timeless and beautiful home to embrace your personal style and make design choices that reflect who you are. By incorporating elements that resonate with you, whether it’s a favorite color, a cherished family heirloom,  or an accessory that reminds you of recent travel, you can create a space that feels uniquely yours.
